Frequently Asked Questions About Tile Installation

What type of tile is best for floors?

Porcelain tile is generally one of the best choices for floors because it is dense, durable, moisture-resistant, and available in many sizes and styles. Ceramic tile can also work well in lighter-use residential areas when it is rated for floor installation. Always confirm that the tile is approved for floor use and has the proper slip resistance for the space.

What type of tile is best for shower walls?

Porcelain and glazed ceramic tile are both excellent choices for shower walls. Porcelain is especially durable and moisture-resistant, while glazed ceramic offers a wide range of colors, patterns, and finishes. Large-format porcelain panels can also create a clean appearance with fewer grout joints. The waterproofing system behind the tile is just as important as the tile itself.

Where is the best place to install natural stone tile?

Natural stone tile works especially well in entryways, foyers, bathrooms, shower walls, fireplace surrounds, feature walls, patios, and other areas where its unique color and texture can stand out. The specific stone must be approved for the location, and some natural stone requires sealing and additional maintenance.

What surfaces can tile be installed over?

Tile may be installed over properly prepared concrete, cement backer board, approved tile membranes, and other suitable substrates. The surface must be clean, stable, flat, and properly prepared before installation.

How should tile and grout be cleaned?

Use a cleaner approved for the specific tile and grout. Avoid harsh or abrasive products unless the manufacturer recommends them. Proper cleaning and maintenance can help tile surfaces remain attractive for decades.

What grout options are available?

Options may include cement-based grout, high-performance grout, and epoxy grout. The best selection depends on joint width, tile type, location, stain resistance, and maintenance needs. Epoxy grout can provide long service life when properly installed and maintained.

Why are expansion and movement joints important?

Tile assemblies need properly placed movement joints to accommodate building movement, temperature changes, and expansion. Without them, tile or grout may crack.

When can I walk on newly installed tile?

Wait times depend on the mortar and grout products used. The manufacturer’s cure-time instructions should always be followed before allowing foot traffic or placing furniture.

Do you perform shower water tests?

Yes, when appropriate. A water test checks the shower waterproofing assembly before tile installation. Schluter recommends waiting 24 hours after completing membrane seams and connections before water testing.

Is tile and grout waterproof?

No. Tile and grout are not inherently waterproof. Wet areas require a complete waterproofing system behind the tile to properly manage moisture.

Does natural stone tile need to be sealed?

Many natural stone products and some cement-based grouts may require sealing. Requirements depend on the stone, grout, finish, and manufacturer recommendations.

How long does tile flooring last?

Properly installed and maintained tile can last for decades. Its lifespan depends on the tile type, substrate preparation, installation system, traffic, and maintenance.
